Ralph K. Smith founded Smith & Son, Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning, formerly R. K. Smith Heating, in 1937. He started out working in his detached garage with two other gentlemen and one company truck. In the early 1940's he sold, installed, and serviced gravity coal furnaces and guttering. From 1938 through 1943 he installed gravity coal furnaces and guttering in all of the homes constructed by Frazee and Schloss Construction Company in Speedway Indiana. This was approximately 200 homes per year.
David A. Smith, Ralph’s son, started working in the heating business at about the age of eight. In 1952 when he was 14, Dave installed his first furnace completely by himself. After high school Dave began to work full time for his father, servicing and installing furnaces and gutters.
Ralph K. Smith passed away in September 1964 and David was asked to take over the family business. In 1965 the company became incorporated and formally changed the name to Smith & Son, Inc. Heating & Air Conditioning. Dave continued to run the business from his mother's garage until he purchased the warehouse (formerly known as the Yeftich Grocery Store) in 1968.
Through the years the company has installed and serviced many different types of equipment. Starting with gravity coal furnaces the industry has had many advances in technology. From oil conversion burners, gas conversion burners, forced air oil and gas furnaces, water source air conditioners, air-cool air conditioners, electric forced air furnaces, air to air heat pumps, geo-thermal open and closed loop ground water heat pumps, and hot water boilers.
Smith & Sons has also installed commercial rooftop heating and cooling units over the years for our light commercial customers.
In February of 2007 Dave sold the company to Tom Sipes, a long time friend with over 30 years in the HVAC business. Currently Smith & Son, Inc. has grown to 12 employees running 9 trucks. Almost half of our employee's have been with us for over 15 years.
Included on the staff are, Amy Laque, Dave’s daughter, our Controller, with the company since 2000 and Cindie K. O'Neal, Dave’s other daughter is our Dispatcher. William C. Bradley, son-in-law to Dave, has been with the company since 1978 and Dave is still making sales calls. All the staff wish to continue the level of service that Smith & Son has always delivered.
